Toboggans: A Few Quick Tips

1. Toboggans are generally considered to be any snow sled with runners and a wooden platform, but you'll also see longer snow sleds of any kind being called "toboggans." Whether wooden, inflatable or plastic, the important thing to remember is that you shouldn't pack more than the prescribed number of people on them.

2. The proper hill for tobogganing should be a gentle slope free of trees, rocks and other obstacles (including jumps!). If the hill is too icy, you might have missed your chance. An icy hill is nearly impossible to stop on and should not be attempted.

3. We know you're mother already told you, but be sure to bundle up. Being even a little numb from the cold can slow your response time when you need to act fast. Any loose scarves and strings should also be tightly tucked in so that you don't get wrapped up by a sled part or a tree.

4. Toboggans are among the fastest kinds of snow sleds that are used in casual recreation (meaning just finding a hill and hurtling yourself down it). Don't be a sucker and think that you don't need a helmet because snow is soft or that there are no trees around. Snow can freeze thicker and harder than your skull and it can also hide plenty of things such as rocks and logs.

5. People often like to glorify doing any activity at night. While there is a certain romance to it, use some sense and know that wherever and whenever you're tobogganing or sledding, the hill should be properly lit. A time of day that offers shadows is great too, as you'll be more able to discern any small inconsistencies in your hill.

6. After descending the slope, quickly move to the side and ascend where people are not coming down. This is common sense, it would seem, but it is a rule that is frequently violated. Usually, it's just a little rude because others have to wait, but it can also be quite dangerous.

7. Talking about sledding and tobogganing usually ends up in a discussion about safety, but remember you're out there to have fun. That means some discretion is allowed. If you've got a hill with deep snow and no trees or obstacles around, take a few slow test runs to get the feel of the hill and then you're pretty much free to go as fast as you want (though racing should be discouraged unless there is lots of room).
